The entire team!
The Year 5 team with Annicka Brosnan. Annicka was our visiting Young Farmer. She works at her family farm, it is a hydroponic lettuce farm. At first we didn't know much about hydroponics but we worked out that it is when things are grown in water! We had lots and lots of questions for Annicka and she taught us a lot. We discussed the different elements that plants need to survive and how that compares to what we, as humans, need. Annicka also told us about all of the different ways that her family's farm is environmentally friendly and the different ways that they recycle and reuse many waste products.
The creative team
Designing the calf to represent our new knowledge and understanding was always going to be a big task. Initially, we had many, many designs ideas and struggled to narrow it down.
After narrowing down the design, a smaller design team was keen to meet together on a regular basis to start the representation of our acquired knowledge onto the calf.

I have really enjoyed the Archibull experience. It was great learning about all of the different kinds of agriculture and learning what horticulture is.
I especially loved the creative part and that fact that you get to have fun with your friends.
I enjoyed learning about things that I probably wouldn't have learnt about if it wasn't for the Archibull competition.

I liked learning about agriculture and what it does to the environment and different ways that farm work. I enjoyed learning about where our food comes from and that makes me think a bit more about things when I sit down to eat dinner.
I loved the fact that this competition is 'many hands on deck', there were times when there were 5 or 6 of us working on the cow at once and it was great!

I have learnt about healthy eating and also the difference between fruit and vegetables. I really liked the visit from the farmer and learning about what she does. I really enjoyed learning about hydroponics and how her farm uses many by products to create real food. I have learnt about horticulture. I like the calf that we have created and how the teachers let us do it ourselves. I think we have created a good representation of what we have learnt.

I have learnt that Archibull takes a lot if time, but it is so worth it at the end. I have learnt that how a little idea can grow and change and develop as you go through the process and I am really proud of what we have created as a team. I enjoyed the farmers visit and learnt about using different resources to make things grow. I think hydroponics is a really interesting way to grow plants and I never thought that you could grow plants without soil.

I really enjoyed the farmer visit and learning about Annicka's life in her family's farm. We learnt that they grow their lettuce and vegetables in water rather than soil. They add foam and nutrients to a produce called cocopeat, which is made from the outside of coconuts, and then they mix it altogether in a concrete mixer! The parts of the plants that they cannot package and sell are eaten by the family's lambs and sheep so nothing goes to waste. I love how environmentally friendly they are and how much thought they put into helping the environment.

I have learnt that fruit and vegetables are important to healthy eating. I am really proud of how hard we worked on the calf. I learnt new things when Annicka came to visit us. I learnt that the outside of the coconut can actually be used as a kind of soil. I learnt that foam can be used so that the roots have room to spread out so that the plants can grow better.
I liked that farmers reuse a lot of things so that they help the environment. On Annicka's farm, their lambs eat the roots and bits of the plant that they can not sell to the restaurants and markets.
