We began our learning journey with some planting.
We got pots, shovels, soil, seeds and small plants to try to grow our own fruit, vegetables and flowers.

We loved getting our hands dirty and digging in the soil.
We investigated what our plants would need to survive and discussed the best place to keep them to give them a great chance.

We had to make sure we labelled all of our pots so that we knew what we had planted where.
It was great working together to make big things grow from little beginnings.
This started our thinking about the design of the calf. We knew we wanted to incorporate plants, flowers, fruits and/or vegetables somewhere on him...

Our finished pots were filled, watered and named. We kept them over in the garden near the fence. We decided who would be responsible for watering them and checking on them before we got to meet together again.
Unfortunately, the local wildlife got to our plants before we could, we hope the possums enjoyed eating our flowers and seedlings.

When Annicka Brosnan came to visit us, she brought cocopeat. Cocopeat is a by product of the coconut. Her family uses this as a base soil product on their hydroponic lettuce and herb farm. We put it in buckets and added water. We were amazed by the changes we saw and felt. The cocopeat went from a hard rock to a soft and squishy dirt like substance that we agreed plants would grow well in.
The Young farmer visit was great! We learnt about the agricultural industry and different jobs that people have, from planting seeds, watering and tending to plants, picking and packing and even driving delivery trucks.
Annicka taught us many of the sustainable practices that her family's farm use. Such as the use of by products (cocopeat from coconut husks and foam) to help provide a basis for their plants to grow in. She discuss water usage and wastage and how they even feed the plant roots and parts that they can't sell to their farm animals.
