What is Climate change?
Climate change is a change in global or regional weather patterns. It originally became apparent in the mid to late 20th century. Many people believe that it can be attributed to the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the air.
Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere naturally but with the increase in manufacturing and technologies, human made gases are also being released into the air. This combined with naturally released gases enhance the greenhouse effect which, in turn, leads to climate change.

How does climate change impact the agricultural industry?
Climate change can affect the amount of rainfall that falls onto farms and farming areas. All crops need sunlight, nutrients and water to live and grow. If farms do not get as much rain as their crops need then the crops are not going to grow as well of the farms are not going to be able to produce as many crops which will affect how much money the farmers can make and how many fruit and vegetables get to the marketplace. If the amount of food that is reaching the shops is less due to less rainfall at the farms then prices will be higher for people to buy the food that they need.

What can farmers do to help with the impact of climate change?
Farmers need to be aware of the water that they need to keep their farms going and have a plan of how to allocate their water. Many farms are not connected to 'town water' and they rely on dams and rainwater tanks.
They need to save any water they can and only use what they need. Farmers should be using the water on their crops rather than watering their flowers or keeping their front lawn grass green. Farmers also need to look after their soil as this will provide good nutrients for the crops and if farmers plants trees to keep their soil fertile then they will also stop soil erosion. If farmers try not to use fertilisers and pesticides, this will also help to minimise climate change and then the effect on rainfall may not be a great.

What can we do to help with climate change?
We need to be conscious of what we do, how we do it and the technology we use. The more we drive cars that give off exhaust and carbon dioxide the more we are contributing to climate change. So ride your bike or walk to work and school, or at least carpool with other people so you are not all driving cars with one person. We can also watch how much water we use, have shorter showers and do not use water wastefully. We also need to make sure that we try not to use electricity when we don't need to. Turn off lights when you are not in the room and switch your appliances off at the wall rather than using them on standby mode. But maybe the most important thing to do is to talk about the problem with your friends and family. One person can change a little but many people can make a big change. Change your habits, encourage others to change theirs and together we can change the world.
